U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable
ART (antiretroviral therapy) is very effective at improving the health of people with HIV and at reducing the amount of the virus in a person’s blood.
When the viral load is so low it cannot be detected by a test, it is called “undetectable.” Having an undetectable viral load is the best thing a person with HIV can do to stay healthy over their lifetime.
If a person’s viral load stays undetectable, then HIV cannot be transmitted to a partner during sex. It is untransmittable. Our U=U title:
- Emphasizes the success of HIV treatment
- Defines an undetectable viral load
- Explains HIV cannot be transmitted sexually when virus is undetectable
- Discusses the need to adhere to treatment plan
