Teen Options to Prevent Pregnancy (TOPP) Curriculum
The TOPP program aims to prevent rapid repeat pregnancy and promote healthy birth spacing among teens by providing telephone and home-based care coordination and access to family planning and other services. It uses Motivational Interviewing to guide teens in choosing birth control, with an emphasis on long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods. In addition to the implementation manual, the program comes with 50 copies of the Birth Control Facts brochure used in the original program as well as a Birth Control Quick Guide for facilitators' use and information.
What the Research Shows
The randomized control trial showed that TOPP participants:
- Had fewer unintended repeat pregnancies and births
- Were more likely to use birth control and to choose LARC methods
- Were less likely to have unprotected sex
Training and ongoing coaching in Motivational Interviewing (MI) with a MINT trainer is strongly recommended before implementing the TOPP program. Training for TOPP and ongoing MI coaching is available from Gary Stofle, LISW-S, LICDC-CS, BCD, who worked with the original TOPP study.
