Session 2: Honoring Ourselves and Our Values

Session Overview

Group members will examine risk behaviors and why young people may feel invincible or invulnerable, and understand how this can place them at risk for unplanned pregnancy, or STDs including HIV. They will learn to identify their values through discussion, ranking and voting activities, and use their personal values to make decisions.

Activity 1: Opening Ritual and Review

At the start of the session, group members will be able to recall key highlights from Session 1.

Activity 2: Identifying the Risk

By the end of the session, group members will learn accurrate information about pregnancy, STDs, and HIV infection.

Activity 3: How Risky Is It?

By the end of the session, group members will be able to identify behaviors that do and do not put young people at risk for STDs, and HIV infection.

Activity 4: Am I Invincible?

By the end of the session, group members will be able to describe reasons teens engage in risky behaviors.

Activity 5: What's Important to You?

By the end of the session, group members will be able to describe the concept of personal values.

Activity 6: Ranking Your Values

By the end of the session, group members will be able to rank selected personal values.

Activity 7: To Each Their Own: Other's Values May Not be the Same as Yours

Group members will be able to discuss selected personal values about relationships and sexuality with others in their class.

Activity 8: Wrap-Up and Closing Ritual

By the end of the session, group members will be able to summarize key points from the day’s activities.
